Korean households’ monthly private education expenditures rose to record levels during the third quarter of the year, the National Statistical Office said yesterday.

According to the NSO’s quarterly household accounts report, local households spent more than 143,000 won ($153) on private lessons and hagwon tuition each month of the last quarter. According to statistics reported in the Joongang Ilbo on November 8, 2007, there are currently 17,020 native English speakers working in South Korea on an E-2 Visa. There are many others who may have other types of visas, but since the E-2 visa is the most popular, I would argue it’s about 20,000 or so…maybe topping out at 25 to 30,000, but less likely that there are other types of visa holders. Who knows though? There are statistics available online that may be able to reveal the exact number.
